Woman arrested three times for Disney vacation scam
IAMI (WSVN) — Police said a South Florida woman has been arrested a third time for scamming people out of thousands of dollars worth of fake tickets to Disney World on Craigslist.
“Ma’am, you’re being charged with five counts of grand theft,” said a bond court judge.
Nancy Alvarez, 21, faced the bond court judge Tuesday after police said she sold fake Disney tickets on Craigslist. This is the third time Alvarez has been arrested for this crime. “The victims in this case lost a total of $7,640, and the victims had no relationship to each other, except for responding to advertisements on Craigslist,” said Florida Department of Agriculture Agent Tara Feiner.
One of the victims is Jodie Wertel of New York. She was taken for $3,500 when she planned to take her 8-year-old daughter on a Disney vacation. “I went on Craigslist again, and I saw there were warnings about her on Craigslist in Orlando. Then I said, ‘Oh, my goodness, I just got scammed,’” Wertel said.
Alvarez was first arrested in July for the crime. Police then arrested her again in October. Her attorney said she surrendered to police a third time on Monday. “They are serious allegations, and we hope to get to the bottom of it and resolve it in a way that could be beneficial to everyone involved,” said attorney Carlos Fleites.
The state attorney’s office said as many as 14 of Alvarez’s victims live out of the state, including Wertel, who is a single mom. “You think you’re getting a bargain, but you’re really not,” said Wertel
